The Implications of Apple’s Latest Move into the Home

The Implications of Apple’s Latest Move into the Home.

While Apple’s decision to move in to the “connected” home environment may or may not have any impact upon the home security industry, what will have an impact is the perception of the consumer that their home security system of the future will include some of the very features that Apple is stating will be included in their offering.

Consumer perception of what a product should or should not be able to do will dictate where and how the industry moves for the foreseeable future.

The phrase “there’s an App for that” has found it’s way in to every product advertised on TV today.  Connectivity has broken the chains and has moved to areas far outside of the home, to include such services as OnStar who is now including WIFI hotspot features in their newest releases, and cellular carriers expanding their MIFI and web-connected phones in even the most basic service plans.

So whether Apple succeeds or fails within the connected home environment is really immaterial, as they have already made an impact just by looking in that direction…

As George used to say to Elroy on the Jetson’s cartoons of the 60’s – “Up up and away”…

‘Free’ Medical Alert Devices Scam Resurfaces – AARP

‘Free’ Medical Alert Devices Scam Resurfaces – AARP.

As the age old say goes – BUYER BEWARE…

Consumers need to be extra diligent when dealing with slick talking telemarketers and persuasive door-knockers, both who promise deals that almost always sound “to good to be true”…

If in doubt contact local law enforcement or other consumer protection agencies to verify if these groups are “working” a particular area or conducting a known scam…

Better to risk being embarrassed for a minute than pay the price for months or years to come.

On Your Side: Samsung cell phone fire – FOX 32 News Chicago

On Your Side: Samsung cell phone fire – FOX 32 News Chicago.

This is a must read / watch article for everyone… People don’t realize that most electronic devices, like cellphones, laptops, tablets, iPads, etc… need to breath to dissipate heat that can build up within the unit.

Anything with a rechargeable battery needs to dissipate heat even if it is unnoticeable. Fires like the one described in the article is the result of heat building up to the level where it can melt the plastic case, swell the battery to the point it leaks battery acid, and cause the surrounding material to smolder and catch fire.

Share this story and help spread this much needed safety warning…

Possible Scam Artist Targeting ADT Customers in Virginia – Security Sales and Integration

Possible Scam Artist Targeting ADT Customers in Virginia – Security Sales and Integration.

These situations seem to be occurring more frequently, or the media is reporting on more of the occurrences. Regardless consumers need to be extra vigilant when dealing with anyone approaching their home, security related or not.

On the other side of this issue the industry needs to increase its support for true sanctions for those attempting to prey upon consumers, whether they are door-knockers or scam artists…

Attempting to defraud a consumer is a crime, and criminal penalties need to be imposed on these individuals…

Missouri governor vetoes teacher gun legislation

Missouri governor vetoes teacher gun legislation.

It is interesting that in the same week when the first class designed to instruct teachers / administrators how to be school security officers is held in Texas, legislation which would create a similar program in Missouri is vetoed.

School security can only suffer when addressed on a politically driven state-by-state basis. School security needs a national level discussion which develops a comprehensive plan for dealing with the in-school violence which has become far to common in today’s reality…

Politicians create political solutions… What is needed is the security industry to develop a security solution…

Hopefully, Missouri, and other states find a common sense solution which “actually” leads to safer schools in their communities…

CSAA considers nationwide licensing bill | Security Systems News

CSAA considers nationwide licensing bill | Security Systems News.

Congratulations to CSAA for exploring a “national” solution to the inconsistency of monitoring station regulations / licensing from state to state.

One question that will need to be answered is how will this national approach impact those states where no current monitoring licensing exist.

More discussion will obviously occur as this effort progresses…

Training in Session for Texas Educators to Become School Marshals — Security Today

Training in Session for Texas Educators to Become School Marshals — Security Today.

Very interesting article obviously touching on a rather sensitive topic.

The fact that they are mandating the applicable training is commendable.

The primary concern that is usually voiced on this topic is the fact that the school is trying to have teachers / administrators serve two distinctly different functions within the building.

From a practical standpoint it would seem that a better option would be to place school resource officers or law enforcement officers within the school instead of trying to adapt teachers / administrators to this challenging role, but obviously there are financial considerations impacting upon that option.

It will be interesting to see how many of the seven educators graduate the training program.
